Waking Up on April 1st

Beethoven in 1814I’m having one of those mornings. I need more tea to wake up. And I think a soak in a nice hot tub full of suds. The sound of the girls’ giggling at their own April Fool’s jokes is too much for me today. I feel as though my eyes are trying to turn backwards in my head every time the girls’ voices hit that shrill pitch of excitement.

I used to wake up to the Westminster chimes of my Dad’s grandfather clock, a nice deep song counting out the hour. I could even manage to “come alive” in the morning to the Ode to Joy played on a clock – did you know they have grandfather clocks that do that now?

Ah, one of my shrill-voiced offspring has brought more tea! That’s better. And a little surfing around looking at Howard Miller grandfather clocks hasn’t hurt, either. Apparently they make the clocks with Ode to Joy chimes, so I’ve been looking to see if I can find which models do, just to see what they are like. I wonder whether they have a specific look to them?

My parents’ clock was in the front hall. Ours is far too narrow for that, but wouldn’t it be lovely to have a grandfather clock in the office? Listening to the deep tones of the chimes every quarter hour may take some getting used to, but I find it quite grounding.

There we go! Chime samples to play while browsing clocks. Of course I like the classic Westminster chime that I know so well, and the Ode to Joy was quite nice too. On a clock it’s not quite as invigorating as playing the actual symphony (a good thing on a morning like this one.) The girls say they prefer the higher pitched chime samples we played. Like attracts like, doesn’t it?

Oh well, more tea. And soon it will be time for that soak. April Fool’s jokes are supposed to officially end at noon, aren’t they?
